Happy January!

Happy New Year everyone and I hope your holidays were great.  Ours was difficult since my brother in-law passed on the 23rd- another victim of cancer.  It was expected but especially difficult with Christmas so near.
I brought this arrangement back from the funeral.  I had yellow flowers poked in it but they're gone now.  I'll see how the plants do.  My plan was to use this outdoors in the summertime.  I'll think of Jim each time I look at it.

Before we were leaving to be with the family I snapped a quick shot of the amaryllis because I wasn't sure if it would still be blooming when we got back.  It became so tall I had to stake it.

When we got back home it was still blooming and was much larger since the 2nd stem of flowers had opened up.  Our furnace had quit and the house was rather cold which may have slowed down the plant a bit.  Thankfully Dan was able to fix it but it took hours for the house to warm up.

Such a delight to see in the midst of winter.

It was supposed to be Royal Velvet (red) but after looking it up on the internet I've decided this one is called Orange Sovereign.  Not my first choice for the holidays but still pretty.   A bonus 3rd stem came up and it's about ready to bloom!  Overall by the time it's done blooming I will have had a month of flowers from this one bulb.

Did you grow anything to bloom like paperwhites or such?  I've decided not to grow paperwhites any longer because I really do not like their smell.  They are cute and easy to grow so I understand the attraction.

Winter finally found us after a very long easy going start.  I knew it was too good to be true that we had no snow and even the temps were very moderate.  We're about 43" behind our usual total at this point.  Believe me- I'm not complaining!  Next week the arctic air is moving in and it will feel like January.

  1. Hello Liz .. I am so sorry for your loss .. it is especially sad that time of year too.
Your amaryllis is so pretty even if it turned out to be orange ... that sort of thing happens a lot ...
I have many more ferns that survive our winter .. ostrich, Japanese Painted.. loads of varieties of those .. log fern .. it is just the Autumn fern that seems to be iffy with our winters and this has been a quirky one for sure .. not enough insulating snow cover.
Thank you for dropping by my blog girl : )

  3. I am so sorry to hear this news Liz, my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I have gone for hyacinths this year and they are just unfurling and producing their scent which is intoxicating.

Keep safe and warm. The snow looks beautiful xx

  5. Oh my...I am sorry that you have lost a family member.
I just love Amaryllis, they are such lovely things and the longer you keep them the bigger the flowers. Is this one older, and he is gorgeous!

  6. Im so sorry for the loss of your brother-in-law.

Your amaryllis is absolutely stunning! What a beautiful surprise to come home to,

We've had pleasant weather here in Missouri but the forcast is for some snow this weekend and much colder temperatures. I'm not looking forward to it but we need to have some 'winter' sometime!

  7. Hi Liz, my condolences on the loss of your bil. I know it had to be a difficult time at Christmas. Your plant is gorgeous and so tall. Glad you have heat once again. It's cold here now too. No snow but cold and windy today. Your snowfall looks pretty. Have a nice weekend and stay warm. Celeste xo

  8. Hi Liz, Happy 2016! Sorry about your bil, and yes, such a tough time of year. My dad was buried on Christmas Eve when I was a teen, he was 50. Not a Christmas goes by without the memory of that sad time.
Thank God your pipes didn't freeze when your heat went off, that would have been a nightmare! We have been spared the snow thus far, but everyone is nervous after last year's many blizzards and storms!
I only have a Christmas cactus and a shamrock plant. I am not much of an indoor gardener. Someone gave me a peace lily and primrose for Christmas, let's see if I kill them! :)
Step carefully in that snow! I had a bad fall on Christmas day carrying packages into my son's. I didn't see a bag on the floor and I went flying back and hit my head and back on the slate floor. I'm still sore, but lucky I didn't break anything! Stay warm.

  10. I am really sorry and know how hard it is to lose someone over the Holidays. I love the planter they used for the arrangement and it is masculine compared to most of them. It will certainly remind you of him every time you look at it.
The other is gorgeous- even if it is orange! xo Diana

  11. Sorry to hear of your loss....that is quite an amaryllis. I do not have any this year so i am growing paperwhites....I also am not a fan of the smell so I hope to have other bulbs growing indoors next year.
