Cottage Garden Inspired

Over the Memorial Day weekend we visited our family.  We were at the farm where my husband grew up and lilacs were blooming everywhere.  I admired this deep rich purple one but there is only one bush so we only cut one small branch.  I'm going to keep it watered until some roots pop out and plant it up here at our home.

 They smell heavenly too!

So I'm staring at it thinking I should use it for
a tablescape- can't let the flowers go to waste!

This new octagon steeple shaped artifact had a bit
to do with my cottage inspiration!

I made a trip to the garden in between the
downpours of rain and snipped a couple of tulips.
I dressed the bottom of this steeple
piece with a hedge of silk hydrangeas.

Bear with my imagination-  I raised the vase
with the lilac so it would be high like a tree and
the flowers are the garden.
Blur your eyes and visualize!!

The creamy white fleur-de-lis mugs go well
 with my cottage garden theme.

I love these dishes because they remind me of
iron garden gates.
These dishes have a very understated purple accent on them and worked well with the placemats and the lilacs.
The favorite standby white chargers from Pier 1 make another appearance.  I chose creamy white, olive green, and purple for my color theme.  Indulge me with the red tulip....I'm a big fan of red!

We're cheating and having some take home tonight!
I hope this rain clears up so I can get out in the
real garden!

I'll be joining a couple of parties
this week

  1. What a beautiful tablescape, Liz. I love the lilac "tree" and it all looks just beautiful. The china is really sweet- xo Diana

  2. You're not cheating...you're splurging! The lilacs are magnificent, and I think that the steeple is perfect set in front of your window with a view to the garden. Everything came together beautifully. Thanks for inviting us for a peak. Cherry Kay

  3. Pretty table, Liz! I love the purple of that lilac cutting. It is just beautiful and I'll bet it smells wonderful in your home.

  4. I didn't have to use my imagination too much. It seems brilliantly apparent what you were going for, and it looks great! I can't think of the name of the tree, but I am reminded of that tree the way the lilacs cascade over the top of the steeple. I can certainly visualize the flowers growing, too! The red one reminds me of those photos you see that are in all black and white except for a single element which is red. Cool!!! (They did that image in "Schindler's List", and that scene stuck with me forever.) I can see the beautiful bands of purple around the bowl and the dinner plate and throughout the scrolled design. Perfect! I wonder who thought to do that? It's really pretty! And that design really does remind one of ornamental iron work!!! Wow! I can totally see that!!!

I had no idea you could root a lilac branch!!! Shows how little I know about nature and gardening!!! I hope it roots nicely for you and that you're able to enjoy lots of beautiful lilacs for years to come! We'll all be able to remember when it was just a little tyke! :-)

    1. Thanks Alycia! That little lilac will probably take a good month to root and several years to amount to much. It's always fun to know you started it and watch it grow!

  5. Good luck with the lilac cutting, Liz. Such a pretty spring like table. Love the dishes and the centerpiece is so unique. xo

  6. Hope you eventually are able to get a beautiful lilac tree from your cutting!...your table is so beautiful Liz...and hope that the rain stopped!!

  7. Very pretty Liz! The lilacs are gorgeous and how perfect with that beautiful china! I love your new steepled house in the center, you have found a great palette and accessories to show it off!

  8. Those dishes do resemble iron gates, Liz! I love the lilac tree on your cottage table. I'm a big fan of red, too. Those chargers are wonderful.

  9. Holy Crimoli...that intense purple color is incredible!! I hope it roots for you. Keeping fingers crossed.

Your entire table is just lovely. Those bowls are beautiful & I am seriously coveting your white chargers!

The elegance of the creamy white fleur-de-lis mugs would make dishwater taste special. LOL

    Very pretty scene, Liz,

  10. Love the lilacs Liz, we filled the church with them for our wedding 34 years ago! What a fabulous color. I didn't know you could root them like that! How incredible. Can't wait to hear if that works well. I would love a bunch of lilacs that color - so intense.

Your plates and bowls are incredible. Yes, they do remind me of iron gates and I love how you offset the bowls. That is a clever way to present. I am going to try that for a dinner party. It surely looks like a cottage garden with a fabulous flowering tree!

  11. Liz, well I didn't know you could grow a new lilac from a cutting.. omg, where have I been??? I love the garden setting you've put together. The dishes are so wonderful!! so graphic and yes, so much like a lovely garden gate. Still love our chargers.. they are the best.. xo marlis

  12. Oh those plates do remind me of the wrought iron.

    Just lovely.
