Reflecting and Being Thankful

Many enjoyable gatherings have been shared with my family at Thanksgiving and it brings up a lot of memories for me.  We lost our Dad on Thanksgiving night 1991 and we all miss him dearly.  I'm thankful that my mother is still with us and grateful to celebrate yet another holiday with her!

This time of year is always a mix of emotions.  The Christmas holiday season is breathing down our necks and we tend to get wrapped up with the decorating and buying gifts.  I look forward to enjoying the day with family and reflecting on good times from the past.

My Mom always set a nice table for our gatherings.  It's funny how things like that stick with you all your life.  I'm a sucker for a traditional table with fine china, crystal and silverware!

I staged the placemats a bit off center with the place settings set on the left leaving room for the silverware that I angled and to allow the corner cornucopia design to show.

I pulled apart an arrangement I made in early October and reused a few pieces to make this new arrangement up.  I had the urn for a while and was looking for a way to use it.  The glass riser is a useful piece to add height and a little glamour!

The white tones were played up a bit more with these S and P shakers and the turkey below

I laid sheaves of grain underneath the turkey for a little ornamentation.  Some pieces are functional some are decorative which can easily be removed for dining.

I mixed my Ralph Lauren Ashton glasses with the Pier 1 Golden Luster Crackle stemware for a little sparkle and glow!

I like to use this glass lidded turkey dish for the cranberry sauce.  I believe I got this through the Martha Stewart web site years ago when she had her own on-line shopping setup.

A few mini pumpkins tossed in with the brown candle to bring in a little color up above

I combined a wood charger from Pier 1, my gold and red accented dinner plates from Macy's which are normally for Christmas, and the Spode Woodland Turkey salad plates.  The silverware is what I grew up with- by Rogers, called Reflection.  The napkins are a combination of a ruffled rusty copper one along with a red one both from Pier 1.

I was feeling misty eyed thinking about my Dad and all the years that have passed without him.  Suddenly the sun beamed through the front windows for just the shortest time while I was taking some more pictures almost as though my Dad was letting me know he was there.

Ready for some turkey and pumpkin pie? I sure am!

Mmmm....smells good!
Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  1. Your table is beautiful, Liz. I'm sorry you lost your dad on Thanksgiving Day. You'll have that memory attached forever, but it's bittersweet, isn't it? Enjoying fond memories enhances healing and can bring comfort. I pray you enjoy your Thanksgiving as you give thanks for the lives of those still with you as well as your dad. Blessings~

I'm sorry your died passed away on a Thanksgiving Day, but the good thing is that the date for Tks. is never the same, so just think of him with love and thank God for your dad.
    Happy Thanksgiving dear Liz.

  6. Hi Liz, your table is simply gorgeous. You always set a wonderful table with the best of taste and design. Love how you offset the place settings and set the silverware. Every little detail is perfect and now I'm hungry seeing that pumpkin pie!! LOL
I too find this season a mix of emotions when we remember and think about our loved ones no longer with us for the holidays. We just have to keep their memory alive and in our hearts.

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving to you and yours.
    Blessings

  7. Your table setting is simply lovely Liz, I especially love your proud white turkey [one almost followed me home from Pier 1 this year, but I have vowed NOT to buy anything new for the holidays~] I'm sorry the holiday is a little bittersweet for you, but so glad you have your mom to celebrate with. My mom instilled my love of tablescaping and entertaining, she insisted on a proper table...I think the way you showcase the cornucopia on your mats is brilliant! Happy Thanksgiving~

  11. I think it is so sad when our loved ones leave on an "important" day. The hurt won't be bigger because of that. It will be the same but on THAT day it hurts immensely. Because it hurts to know exactly the when I guess. My paternal grandfather died on his younger son's birthday and the date was always so sad. The poor boy was 2 and the family life turned to worse on that day. So for long he never knew a happy day on that day. There was always a shadow.
Hugging you close and knowing that now that the heart healed it will be good to remember and be thankful for him in your lives.
I love this side of your room. I might have seen it before but couldn't remember being so cozy. What a wonderful nook you have there.
I don't think I ever told you but I admire your daring (for me they're daring ahahah) tablecloths choices. This turned out wonderful and so elegant. But then you seem to have an endless stash of wonderful items.
Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy and Be Grateful!

  15. This is a really beautiful table Liz. I noticed your "Reflection" -- that was my mother's pattern. I have it now, and from time to time, I add some to it. I know what you mean about a holiday being bittersweet. Both my parents passed on the Fourth of July holiday, although 21 years apart.

  16. Aw, Liz...now I'm all teary, too. I know you miss your Dad. Twenty-three years may as well be 23 minutes when it comes down to it. I know that I struggle with not being able to set my Daddy's special place at the table and knowing I won't be scooping up monstrous portions of dessert for him after dinner. Dessert was HIS thing! I just loved to pamper him with it!

That glint of light that came in was certainly your Dad saying hello and wishing you a peaceful week ahead. He knows you miss him, and I'm sure he misses you, too. This is his way of communicating. You honor him by continuing the tradition your Mother had of setting a beautiful, formal table. He sees it, and it makes him proud.

Let's make a pact not to stress this holiday season, OK? We just CAN'T, Liz! We're both in pain and we need to just focus on living, loving, and enjoying the fact that God saw fit to let us live another year on this earth with the people we love. We have to look at everything we have to do as something fun or that adds to our lives, otherwise, we'll lose it!!! (Well, maybe not me so much. Paxil is a WONDROUS thing!!!!!) :-)

I love you. Happy Thanksgiving to you, Dan, Chelsea, your Mom, and your entire family! Enjoy yourselves!!!
