Crisp Mornings

Crisp mornings have arrived.  We've been dropping into the mid 50's at night and every morning there is dew on everything.

I was staring out my kitchen window at the pretty purple Vinca flowers and noticed how nice the the Limelight hydrangeas looked in their background so I decided I should pop out there and snap a picture.

I captured a morning shot of the fountain.  It was chilly though so I didn't stay out long!

These little begonias have done well.  I'm about to give up on Lobelia though.  It seems like the slightest misstep on watering and they poop out on you too easily.  These are scraggly and some of the other ones I have are all browned and gone.

Love these fuchsia's.  They've done well and of course the hummingbirds love them too.  I love to plant flowers and shrubs that the birds, bees and butterflies enjoy.

The last flowers are out on these Hostas.

These guys are super tall.

  

Fujibotan Hosta.  A plain medium green leave with a slightly wavy leaf.  A late summer bloomer.

The Browallia took over the window box.  The pink New Guinea Impatiens I planted in there are buried underneath.  

The Limelight Hydrangeas are still looking good.  This set of shrubs is on the backside of my house and bloomed later than the ones out front.

  The arbor is loaded (all on top) with a combination of the Sweet Autumn Clematis, a climbing rose, and some Morning Glories which I still  haven't seen flowers on.  Any day now I'm sure!

Everything is still healthy and growing here.  Some of the pre-potted hanging baskets I bought look terrible though.  I think they over pot them and use cheap soil.  

The one I planted myself looks great, but the others are done.  

I sent my daughter home with a pitcher full of my hydrangeas.  

We mixed some Limelights and Endless Summer ones together.

Today's table was influenced by a floral arrangement I put together after going to the local Farmer's Market over this past Labor Day holiday weekend.

 I was totally intrigued when I saw the giant stalks of Cockscomb.  My eyes zoomed in on the green Zinnias, which go great with the red Cockscomb.  I made my way back to another stand for the Sunflowers that I had my eyes on.

Sunflowers seem to mark the end of summer's growing season.  Always a welcome sight though!

Last year's table was all about red but this year it's all about blue!  The tall crystal vase brings this tablescape to a more upscale level. 

  

Williams Sonoma tablecloth (clearanced).  Love that golden yellow banding on it.

A golden jacquard napkin adds a little more of the color found on the bottom of the tablecloth and from the sunflowers.  A little  wired chicken napkin ring pops in a little more of the French influenced theme.

The navy and white striped napkins are from Pier 1.  I added a plate below with the Fleur de Lis motif and my favorite white chargers, again from Pier 1, along with a navy blue placemat below that helps stabilize the design on this large checked tablecloth.

The hint of red on the edge of the striped napkins ties in with the red in the bistro dishes.  The bistro dishes are also accented with black so the use of the black napkin ring helps tie that together. 

 My white rooster would look good here too

Seashells and Rope

I have been working on the newly created bedroom/den.  

As I've mentioned before on these two posts here and here we converted a downstairs family room into a guest bedroom and the upstairs bedroom into what I am now going to call a den.

Earlier this spring I bought a lantern which has been bouncing around looking for a home.

 I brought it in my office thinking I might use it in there, but that didn't work.  I was also trying to find something unusual to put inside of it.

 I lost  interest with it and it ended up in the bedroom for a while with a cat statue in it just because.  

 I recently found a candle at Pier 1 loaded with seashells in the wax  (where the lantern had also come from) and decided it might work for the lantern.  As an added bonus the candle smells really good!

 

I had the glass cylinder but the candle looked too short inside of it so I coiled up a piece of hemp rope and to elevate the candle.  

I still had a bunch of seashells leftover from my Hobby Lobby purchase so  I staged them around the base.  

The little starfish on the jute string was included with the candle so I reused it on the outside of the glass cylinder.

I'm tickled to have finally have found a way to dress up this lantern.  

It's funny how things are working out between these two rooms that I've exchanged.

Perhaps it was meant to be!

This would be great outside under a protected area for evenings on the patio but for now it will reside in the new bedroom/den.

also become a part of the den.  I'm still tweaking the room and will show it soon.

Hurricane & Seashells!

Back in May I picked up this large hurricane piece from Pottery Barn with a gift certificate sent to me from my kids.

 The hurricane came with the dark wood base and it has a metal edge on the top of the glass which is great for protecting it from damage.

This was being designed for the downstairs nautical family room, which I recently changed to a bedroom.

As you can see I  have some seashells (Hobby Lobby), hemp rope (hardware store) and a flameless candle.

I staged the candle on top of a pedestal so I could have room for the seashells and rope below it.

When I started to assemble this I realized I couldn't use this candle because it proved to be too large.  I have to be able to lift the candle out without removing the glass so everything doesn't fall out.

Here it is after I got it all together.

It made it downstairs to the nautical room, but now it's upstairs in the new bedroom/den that we have been putting together.

I had this wood charger from Pottery Barn that just happened to fit nicely under this hurricane piece.  This room is mostly done with the exception of some wall art.  I'll get around to showing it soon!
