Some Buffalo but no Mulch!

The weekend didn't go as I had thought- but we made the best of it.

There are two buffalo farms near us with and this group is located close to the highway known as US31/M37 which is a pretty busy well traveled road into Traverse City.

We were headed home after doing errands and the buffalo were really close to the fence today.  We see them out in the pasture a lot but rarely this close to the fence line.  Dan drove up the road and turned around so I could capture a few pictures.

I stood outside of the car on a sandy ridge with a pretty powerful wind pushing me.  Nothing will stop this woman when she's on a mission!  LOL.... I told Dan I could just see me falling down the little hill and all the cars passing by taking pictures and I'd make the 6:00 news- but I didn't!

I zoomed in a bit and as you can see they are shedding their winter coat.

I did a panoramic shot which came out pretty good.

We had planned to get mulch out this weekend but the weather was all over the charts.  Saturday we had threatening clouds and as the day went on the wind picked up and the temps dropped.

In the morning I woke to this.  It was 32 degrees and we had a coating of snow.  I can' believe I'm saying that in mid May but I am.  This was pretty rare even for us.

I was ticked about the snow and decide to tear into my cupboards again.  I've had a mish-mash  of stuff in the glass door cupboards but when I get done it will be only be creamy white dishes that will show.  I don't know where the other things are going but that's half the fun- right?

Eventually the temps climbed into the low 50's so that was great but it was windy and made it seem very chilly. Just the same- it turned into a pretty day and that was a nice reward after last nights crap weather!  This doesn't look like much but once the trees are fully leafed out and the plants are filled in it becomes  quite a different look.  Visit my 2nd blog "Sit With Me In My Garden" which I mainly focus on my gardens and things around the outside of the house.

The turkeys are still visiting quite regularly.  They're used to me now coming around to taking pictures and let me get closer now.  We've had 4 toms visiting trying to get the attention of the hens.  This shot is actually 3 of the toms.  Though it's fun to see them they are hard on the landscape.  They drink from the bird baths and pick leftover seeds from the bird feeders.  They forage for food and the ground gets really torn up.

Buh-bye for now!

I will be joining-

  1. Liz, you have some great shots of the buffalo! Are they being raised for meat? It must have been something to see them close up. I'm glad you didn't make the evening news. It's a shame they no longer roam the plains. Did you see on the news, you can adopt a housebroken buffalo--yes really!
It's hard to believe you got more snow! Just to the north and west of us there is a frost warning this evening which is quite late for us! Crazy weather all around. ♥

  2. Yes they are raised for meat. The only place I've seen them roaming was out in Yellowstone Park. I enjoy seeing these guys when they get a little feisty and start to run. They kind of hop and act giddy!

  3. Liz, I must say, you had a very interesting weekend. I am amazed at how big buffalo really are . Then those turkeys, how funny they are in your garden. Honey, I know what you are saying about our crazy weather. Today it did warm up to 54 degrees here, after yesterday's 45. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  5. What beautiful pictures of the buffalo. I love wildlife shots and landscape shots. It really makes me appreciate nature. It really reminds me of what life should be all about. Not complicated, but just back to the basics and real meaning. Oh, I feel so bad looking at the snow. Yes, yesterday there were light snow flakes coming down in our little town. Nothing accumulated, but mentally it was hard to endure. Mid-May and snowflakes??? I agree, with the cold weather it is time to tackle more indoor projects. I hope sunshine and warm weather will soon be coming your way. Warm wishes, Marsha@The Little Yellow Corner Store

  6. The bison are quite ugly when they are shedding, not rally beautiful anyway. :-) So happy we have rain, not snow, although we will see the temps start soaring soon.

  10. What a treat, buffalo and turkey! You got some great shots of the buffalo...they are such a beautiful animal and so huge. That looks like a nice sized herd, too.
It's never a surprise when I see someone post snow pictures this late in the spring, the weather is so fickle these days.
    Have a great week.

  11. Liz, there were no buffalo in Traverse City when I was last there (of course, it's been a while)! Your photos are outstanding -- they draw me right into the scene.

  12. How cool are the buffalo. Great job snapping the photos. I would hate to hear you took a tumble. You have had some crazy weather. At least you were productive getting your cabinets organized. We have lots of wild turkeys too.

  13. Turkeys and buffalo! Not what I was expecting, but pretty cool. Chickens are hard on landscaping too. I can't imagine what turkeys do! But we don't have chickens for the moment either. Spring has been so crazy! Even here. Up and down. Thank you for the nice compliment on my post of my nieces place! SO nice to know that you came by for a look!

  16. There's a little bit of everything in this post and I love it! I would die if snow hit right now. Tearing into the cabinets is a great way to deal with it.

Happy Thoughts of Home to you and your turkeys. :)

  21. Liz, Good for you for going with the flow or was that snow. I love the bison photos, I guess they will be prettier when they have lost all their winter coats. I love the yellow bird bath. Sylvia D.
