Yay the Polar Vortex is gone!

 Hooray the sun is out!
I thought I'd pop in and see how everyone is doing.  We survived last week's "arctic vortex" without any real problems. Goodness it sure got cold!  We were waking up to -5 with a windchill of -25 for a week.  I tell you there was a chill in the house even though the furnace was running.  In the evenings we had the fireplace going to cozy up the living room.
All I can say is I'm glad it's passed.
Last week during the deep freeze my Christmas Cactus was loaded with buds but they wouldn't open.  As soon as that deep chill broke they started to bloom.  It's nice to see some color with all that white background we have!

Sure looks different in the winter around here!!
We've had a total of 89" of snow so far this winter.  It melted down a bit in December and then round two came.  The snow is pretty much knee high in the yard.  Today the sun is out and a welcome sight!  It's been way too gray for too long!
I hope you all survived that deep freeze without any big problems.

Sunlit Sundays

  1. Hello, Liz

It's great to see you back for Sunlit Sunday this winter. Yours in the second blooming cactus I've seen today. I hope mine gets the idea and produces some flowers.

What an incredible amount of snow you've had; it does make for lovely, snowy pictures. You have such a beautiful property, with the sun shining through the trees and onto the snow.

  2. Hi Liz,

Beautiful images of your sunlit world! Your garden angel looks like she is happily skating the day away on frozen ground...and your Christmas Cactus certainly appears to be rejuvenated!

    Have a lovely week!

    Poppy (visiting via Karen's)

  3. Your garden looks so different from the summer to winter.

  4. I'm happy for you and everyone else who had to endure the Polar Vortex! Yikes. I like the sunshine streaming in on your Christmas cactus. Boy, you've got a lot of snow!!

  5. Nice garden, enough to brighten up any Sunday. We have one of those Christmas Cacti

  6. Sunshine in winter is so cheering. Love the pictures of your winter garden - sound asleep and tucked up cosily beneath a blanket of snow!

  7. Love the view out back, especially the shadows across the lawn.

  8. Hi Liz, your Christmas cactus is beautiful and I always enjoy seeing your gorgeous backyard in any season. It looks pretty in the snow. 89" is sure a lot for so soon in the season. We had 95cm in December but a lot melted down in two rain storms this past week.

  9. Your cactus plant is lovely. Nice spot for it to do well. You do get more snow than we do here. Supposedly a new vortex is headed here? Heard it on the news a couple days ago but maybe they've changed that already.

  10. We had freezing temps week before last and now glad we did not have any last week due to the water problems.

  11. Glad to read that cold weather has gone - your snow covered garden looks ever so peaceful but I suppose that's easy for me to say! Being the one who hasn't suffered!

  12. glad the weather has had a change, for me as well but I drove 3 days to get away from it. I love gardening but love also to look over a garden that is covered in snow, it says rest for awhile.

  13. I am so glad that you are on the other side of this awful weather. We are having a brief respite from the wind and the rain. Keep warm and safe xx

  14. Wow 89 inches!! So glad you have warmed up...we too were glad to see sunshine and it was almost 70 here in Oklahoma. Can't imagine how cold -25 must feel! I'm counting the days till spring and garden time! Your Christmas cactus is beautiful!

  15. And still after all that there will be Life for Spring and an Awesome Garden by Summer.
It's cold here but after seeing your pictures and learning the news around USA it feels like beachy weathere ahahahaha. I still have roses, can you believe it? And Orchideas.
It is gunny to see the statue on the header of your blog so deep in the snow ahaha
Stay Warm and Safe Dear Liz!

  16. Your cactus is really pretty. So is your snow-covered yard. Glad it's warmed up now; same here, but a little colder again tomorrow. (but not subzero, thank goodness).

  17. Wow, I guess I should be thankful for the rain in our neck of the woods! Your cactus is gorgeous.

  18. Oh, the disparity around the country. We are in California in a heat wave - mid 80's all week.

Your header photo looks like my sister's garden.

  19. Gosh! 89 inches of snow? I can't even imagine that much. Your Christmas cactus looks great. Mine is soaking in the sun and getting new growth. It bloomed in Nov. :(

  20. Guess you spoke too soon!! It's back!! I'm looking at gardens online and thought I'd check out yours too. Your cactus is beautiful but Spring can't get her soon enough!!
