Friday Quick Notes & Ideas

Plants for the Holidays
I potted up a deep red amaryllis that I'm hoping will bloom around Christmas.  In the meantime my "Christmas Cactus" decided to bloom already.  As you can see through the door I moved the urns from my Fall/Halloween "Deckorating" by the house and that's all I've kept from the whole display.  I thought it would be nice to keep them through Thanksgiving.
So I have both elements of Autumnal decorating and Christmas Decorating mixing together.

I haven't started Christmas decorating except this kind of happened and I wanted to share it. I do not like the smell of Paper White Narcissus and they often grow too tall and become gangly looking so I started looking on the internet and ran across these made by Sage & Co. After doing a bit of research I found these and I ordered from Overstock.com and couldn't be happier.  They sell them as a set of 6 bundles that have six flowers in each bundle.  I saw them for double the price on another website (which was ridiculous).

Don't they look incredibly real!   I'll fuss with the arrangement a bit more but I'm tickled with it already!  You could even fake out that they are potted.  I'm going go add some small stones to the bottom of the glass jars to help stabilize mine and make it appear like they're growing in stones with water which is a common technique of growing the real ones.

The little cedars are from Pier 1 and are going fast.  I got the larger version but there is another smaller one that's real cute.  They come potted in a cute tin with a burlap edge and a bell so they're ready to be displayed.

I just wanted to share that with you in case any of you are like me regarding the Paper Whites.

I'm going to try to do a "Friday Quickies" each week!  Now... where's that string to tie on my finger as a reminder!

Have a great weekend my friends!

  2. Oh, I love the fresh plants and evergreens! My Christmas cactus isn't yet blooming, but then again, it seems to eventually bloom near Christmas and then have even a few blossoms still making the scene at Easter! Love the paper whites. I must get some. Beautiful decorating, Liz!

  7. My Christmas cactus is blooming right now too. It must be more excited about Halloween and Thanksgiving. I agree with you about the real paperwhites. These look like a great alternative. Thank you for the recommendation.

  8. Liz,

  9. Great idea! I've never had real ones. I only have 3 houseplants, a Cmas cactus which is blooming now, a shamrock, of course, and swedish bridal veil. My mom was an avid gardener but we never had indoor plants! She said she had enough to do without caring for plants. 3 are enough for me. I am not hosting Tgiving so I may start Cmas early. I am getting so slow ! I did do some shopping for gifts at the Lenox outlet. They had 25% off everything. Have a good week. Going to be 60 today and sunny! Great for Nov.!

  14. I have been meaning to get an Amaryllis planted. Hope yours blooms just in time for Christmas celebrations. I thought those Narcissus were real! I love the way you have them displayed in the basket with the cedars. So pretty.

  15. Hi Liz, I just stopped and bought my paper whites today. Hubby doesn't like the smell either, but I guess he's getting use to them, because he never says much anymore. Either that, or he's just given up. lol! Yours really do look real. I water mine with vinegar/water mixture to stunt their growth. Heard that somewhere. Your cactus is gorgeous! I"ve got to get an Amaryllis soon. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann
